What is Early Orthodontic Treatment?

Your child’s smile is one of the most beautiful things in the world. At Smile Houzz in North Richland Hills, we understand the importance of ensuring your kid’s smile is healthy and strong throughout their lifetime. Our doctors’ top priority is to make your child feel comfortable and make sure they have a great dental experience early on to avoid anxiety and give them the beautiful smile they deserve.

Early orthodontic treatment can be used to correct misaligned teeth before the condition worsens. Early orthodontic treatment can even correct early signs of bad bites or jaw development.

Some people think that early dental care is less important since children lose their immature teeth, but that could not be further from the truth. A child’s jaw and mouth development can still be affected in their early years, and correcting those issues early can avoid more problems later on.

It is recommended that your child visits an orthodontist between the ages of 7-11 even though they have not  lost most of their immature teeth and before they reach their growth spurt.

Early orthodontic appliances include:

  • Conventional Braces (limited phase)
  • Space maintainers
  • Expanders
  • Face mask/Headgear
  • Habit Appliances – Thumb sucking, Tongue Thrusting

Treatment typically takes 9-15 months, and a dentist may use these applications in combination to help children’s teeth become correctly aligned for a healthy smile as an adult.

Why Should My Child Visit an Orthodontist?

Your child’s smile is important for their oral health and self-confidence. While early orthodontic treatment may seem like overkill, early intervention has been shown to decrease the number of permanent teeth that need correcting, and you may be able to avoid permanent tooth removal for misaligned teeth. In addition, early treatment can often prevent future problems of dental trauma, tooth decay and tooth removal, and even jaw surgery.

As children grow, many physical, developmental, and psychological changes occur. However, there are some things parents can be on the lookout for to help address these issues at an early age.

Common issues that can cause the need for early orthodontics:

  • Thumb sucking
  • Minor speech problems
  • Mouth breathing
  • Overcrowding
  • Crossbite
  • Crooked teeth/gapped teeth
  • Teeth growing elsewhere than the dental arch
  • Underbites/overbites
  • Misaligned jaws
  • Early loss of baby teeth resulting in space loss
  • Incoming adult teeth that are obstructed by baby teeth

Your First Visit

Our pediatric dentists offer comprehensive treatment to provide the best quality dental care for children and teens. When you first visit our office with your child, we will go over:

  • Oral health and medical history

  • Assessment of your child’s teeth, mouth, and skeletal development
  • Treatment plan or preventative care for possible issues

Early Treatment (Phase One)

Early treatment is typically for early signs of dental problems. It is common for a patient to undergo phase one treatment and then continue into a more comprehensive phase or phase two a few years later when the rest of their permanent teeth erupt.

Patients who received phase one treatment typically have a faster phase two as teenagers. Phase two treatment will straighten those teeth into their final alignment as adults.

What Happens After Phase One?

Even if your child’s treatment were started early enough, most times, they would still require phase two orthodontics. It is the most comprehensive early orthodontic care, and it can be effective, fast, and aesthetically pleasing compared to receiving treatment as an adult. The dentist will determine which treatments will be best for your teen when they move to phase two.

HERE ARE SOME PHASE TWO TREATMENTS:

  • Ceramic braces
  • Invisalign
  • Lingual braces
  • Retainers
  • Mouthguards for sports or sleep apnea
  • Bonding
